BalenaEtcher windows 10 hangs on install

Install on windows 10 hangs; also cant uninstall:

Any ideas?

Hi Robert, we tried reproducing the issue you are seeing without any luck. Can you try older versions of etcher and see if that will work?

This issue is still happening in version 1.5.94. When I try to uninstall it says it cannot locate the installer file.

Can you suggest an older version to try?

Similar thing happening with me. I tried to uninstall 1.5.59 to then install 1.5.94, and I canā€™t uninstall the old, and canā€™t install any version. And the old version uninstalled enough that it doesnā€™t work.

Hello All, We are currently investigating this issue. In the mean time, if you can, please could you try installing version 1.5.80, and let us know if the issue still persists. In the case of not being able to uninstall previous versions, please could you try installing the older version over the top, without uninstalling (skipping that step), and please let us know if this does not work. Thank you.

Just to share my experience on this topic.

I had installed the setup version of 1.5.93 without problems. However, I accidentally wiped my Windows 10 ā€œC:\Users[User]\AppData\Localā€ folder in safe mode recently, and my balenaEtcher no longer works.

I had then downloaded setup file for 1.5.95 and the installer would just stop/freeze as in the screenshot provided by @robertimorrison. I thought that the 1.5.95 is buggy and tried reinstalling version 1.5.93. But it too would stop/freeze. The portable version 1.5.95 works fine though.

I suspected balenaEtcher setup version wouldnā€™t reinstall proper because of previous installation traces still in Windows system (i.e. registry, etc.), so I went into Windows Start-Settings-Apps-Apps & features to remove/reinstall but balenaEtcher wasnā€™t listed therein.

I then installed CCleaner and it listed balenaEtcher in list of programs I have in my system. The ā€œuninstallā€ feature couldnā€™t work too as it couldnā€™t find the program. I then clicked ā€œDeleteā€ to remove balenaEtcher from the list of installed progrm.

I then run the ā€œbalenaEtcher-Setup-1.5.95ā€ again and this time it worked/installed without any issues.

Just sharing my experience. In my case, I believe:

  1. I messed up balenaEtcher by deleting ā€œā€¦[user]\AppData\Localā€;
  2. there are settings or dependencies in Windows installation that couldnā€™t be over-written on re-installation and these had to be deleted/removed manually. In this instance, ā€œCCleanerā€ worked for me.

Note: I am not promoting CCleaner as I disliked Piriformā€™s current marketing ploy (i.e. Health Check feature) built into ā€œCCleanerā€. ā€œCCleanerā€ used to be my ā€˜must-haveā€™ program in Windows but I no longer install or use it unless I absolute need to.

Hope my above experience in resolving similar issue as yours helped.

Regards.

This is along the correct lines - Deleting etcher files manually instead of using Windows remove programs, the etcher uninstaller thereā€™s a chance it will fail to cleanup correctly and this issue will occur when trying to reinstall. I would recommend trying to run the uninstaller packaged with etcher, or removing it with another program, and then trying to re-install, hope this helps.

I experience this issue as well. None of the 1.5.9x series (or latest 1.5.100) worked for me. I went all the way back to 1.5.7x and 1.5.8x and it installed fine. I didnā€™t have any issues installing other Electron based apps such as Visual Studio Code or Atom IDE.

Anyone ever discover a manual way to sort this? Iā€™ve got a stuck installer with v1.5.102, and Iā€™d really rather not have to install any third-party app cleaner software.

Oh, and I just tried balenaEtcher-Setup-1.5.89 - it hangs as well. This is some bad installer work. It should resolve simple issues like a missing file. In my case I believe this was caused by me noticing the previous version of Etcher was still in the add/remove programs control panel. So I removed it. But it seems to have partially removed the newer version as well, leaving the newer version with no uninstaller either. And creating this issue of the hanging installers. Very poor.

Hey Wizardling, could you please try with etcher 1.5.92 and let us know how it works for you? Weā€™ve done some testing and this version should work from your end.
Weā€™ll keep working on finding the root cause and find a more permanent solution for these kinds of issues.

Iā€™m having this problem as well. So far none of the suggestions are working, and the installer hangs at around 33%-ish. Iā€™ve tried 1.5.107 and 1.5.92.

Windows 10 Home, Version 2004, installed (updated) 6 July 2020.

My OS thinks I currently have 1.5.56 installed, (it shows up in my Apps & Features screen) and I thought I did too, but itā€™s unexpectedly missing from my Start menu, and I canā€™t find it anywhere on my HD. And when I try to uninstall that version, it says the path under AppData is missing, which I checked and it is. This leads me to believe it was removed by recent the Windows update, because I know I havenā€™t done anything like delete the files manually.

Iā€™m going to do a thorough cleaning of the registry and my HD, and try againā€¦

EDIT: After removing as many references to ā€œbalenaā€ from my registry as I could, the installer for 1.5.107 worked, and I was able to etch an image successfully.

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!: Messing around in the registry editor in Windows can DESTROY your computer, functionally, and render it unable to operate until Windows is reinstalled.

Thanks for Mark for pinging back with a workaround and glad it worked out for you.

I also had the installer hang about 1/3 the way through. I deleted a bunch of stuff from the registry and balena then installed OK.

I think the problematic registry key was for uninstall information.

I think I had balena installed some time ago (probably 2 years) and would have uninstalled it via the windows uninstaller when freeing up space on the C:\ drive.

Thank you, your suggestion worked for me. For anyone else stuck here:

  1. Download the latest setup release of balenaetcher
  2. Extract the files from the exe using a compression utility (I used 7-zip)
  3. Run the uninstaller
