Something Went Wrong | MAC OS X 10.14.6 | Etcher 1.5.111

Trying to write an image to an SD Card but receiving errors. Oddly I get two types of errors on different occasions.

The error states “Something went wrong. If it is a compressed image , please check that the archive is not corrupted.
The writer process ended unexpectedly”

Other times the 2nd part is replaced with
“The value of “offset” is out of range. It must be >=0 && <= 1048576. Received 1048576”

I have tried running as root user and opening Balena with sudo but no joy.

Here is the console report:

Hi there, what OS and etcher version are you using? Thanks

Hi, it is in the title of the post

Oh of course it is sorry!

Although typo in the Mac version. Is actually 10.14.06

A couple of things we can try:

  1. Does it work with other images or SD cards
  2. if the image is compressed, we can try manually uncompressing it before flashing to see if that works
  3. you already tried running with sudo? sudo /Applications/balenaEtcher.app/Contents/MacOS/balenaEtcher
  4. you can try to format the target SD card ((FAT32 - GUID)), unmount it, then launch etcher and try to flash it again.
  1. I haven’t tried any other SD card, I would need to download a new image and try as I don’t have another 128Gb card. I’l do that now…
  2. I uncompressed the image first using unarchiver
  3. yes tried sudo and logging in as root user
  4. I have been formatting the card before flashing as ExFat (which I believe should be compatible?)

Same results unfortunately, used a different image and card, tried via sudo too.

Also tried formatting the card in Disk utility (as opposed to SD Card Formatter) as MS Dos.

Hi,
I can confirm the issue. For a few month now, I can’t flash any image using Mac OS via Etcher. I always fails with the above error message.
I’ve setup now a different computer, where it works.
In the past, it worked flawlessly but after some update, it stopped working. Even after downgrading to older versions of Etcher did not help unfortunately.

Cheers

Hey, we are working on a new release that fixes this! Apologizes for the experience and we will keep you updated when this is fixed!

This is the open issue https://github.com/balena-io/etcher/issues/3366 on the etcher repository

Hello

MAC OS 10.13.6, latest balena etcher version

Hello,

This should be fixed in Etcher 1.5.112

Hey all,
I have MacBook running macOS Big sur. ver 11.4. I having this same Issue when trying to burn ONTO ssd card. I have Balena 1.5.121 and getting this error message as above that was stated ( Error file closed). I’m using that Mac in general is the culprit as state by Fritz? Has anyone solved this solution for mac?

Thank you

Hi @4twin, are you running an Intel or M1 mac?

I’m Running and Intel version. 2015 MACBOOK

Hey @4twin, sorry you’re experiencing this. I’m also running an intel mac and have not had those issues on macOS 11.4 Have you tried uninstall/reinstalling yet?

Hey Dan,
Yes i tried uninstalling it a few times on my Mac. I will be attempting it again on another SSD card and get back with you once I tried. It works completely fine on My windows computer.

Hey @4twin Did you attempt it again with another SD card? Let us know if you still need support

I’m sorry for such a late reply. I checked. It’s not the SD card. SD worked perfect on windows computer so my 2014 MacBook Pro seems to be the problem. I also went into Mac to repair and still didn’t work.

Hi @4twin,

Just trying to understand here, when you say works perfectly on windows - are you able to flash the same image on SDCard which is ExFat formatted? Also, I suppose you are trying a disk util repair for SD Card from mac - if yes, what is the error message are you getting?
