A long time ago I flashed Ubuntu on this USB stick:
Now I want to flash a different OS. Is it safe to let Etcher simply overwrite it or could I be risking damages? Is it safer to format it first? If yes, should I use Windows’ inbuilt formatter?

Hi there, if you no longer need the contents of the USB stick (Ubuntu apparently), then sure you can go ahead and overwrite it. USB media can be written to many times over. And no, there is no need to format it first. Hope that helps.
