Failed to Write on Mac OS Big Sur

I didn’t receive any Mac error messages. Trying to flash Ubuntu on and external drive formatted MS-FAT with GUID Partition Map. Reformatted twice and tried to refills numerous times.

Hi,
Since Big Sur is still in beta, there can be issues with admin privileges, can you try running the following?

sudo /Applications/balenaEtcher.app/Contents/MacOS/balenaEtcher

let me know if the problem persists.

hmm this probly happened due to a faulty or usb drive
try using a better usb or dvd
have you checked itf it was formated mac os extended?
if you are on catalina select apfs
to do this go to launch pad utillities
disk utillity
and select your drive and format it as mac os extended
on catalina do APFS apple file system

I was trying to do a similar thing and got the same error message. I am also using a 2015 MacBook Pro on Mac OS Big Sur, and this solved it for me. Thank you.

I am getting a similar issue on an older Mac, same error message, also trying to flash Ubuntu. I tried formatting Mac OS extended (rather than FAT as per Ubuntu instructions) but no luck.

I have have tried on 2 different USB drives.

Mid-2010 Mac Mini running 10.11.6 (El Capitan).

Thanks in advance.

Hi @cle20,
You mention you run Etcher on Mid-2010 Mac Mini running 10.11.6 (El Capitan).
I understand that the error you get is “The writer process has failed unexpectedly. Please try again, and contact the Etcher team I the problem persists” and that you’ve already tried to run sudo /Applications/balenaEtcher.app/Contents/MacOS/balenaEtcher to open Etcher and didn’t work for you.

To assist you further could you please let us know :

  • The Etcher version you’re running and if this is the latest version. You can find the latest release here: https://github.com/balena-io/etcher/releases
  • Relevant logging output, if any, from DevTools, which you can open by pressing Ctrl+Shift+I or Cmd+Alt+I depending on your platform.

Thanks,
Georgia

Hi Georgia,

Thank you. I tried with the latest build with the same result. I am not able to run from the Terminal as I am having some issues with that as well.

Solved!

Permissions issue was causing both problems it appears.

I’m having the same problem as well, after approving permissions in the popup it cancels

How did you solve the permissions Issue?

Hello, what kind of permissions does the popup show, are you also running on macOS? If so can you try running etcher from the terminal utility via sudo /Applications/balenaEtcher.app/Contents/MacOS/balenaEtcher.

Same problem and and sudo doesn’t help

@fuji246 : Under System Preferences => Security & Privacy => Privacy, have you added BalenaEtcher to Full DIsk Access?

@fuji246, like ksaro1 pointed out, check the Security & Privacy panel. I have just tested the latest version of Etcher (v1.5.113) on macOS Big Sur (v11.0.1 and v11.1) and it worked without problems (and I did not have to use sudo), but macOS raised 2 or 3 pop-ups asking me to authorize Etcher to run and to access folders and removable volumes. If permission had been denied when the pop-ups were raised, this could be later amended as in the following screenshot:

If you are still facing this issue, please share the version of Etcher and the specific version of Big Sur that you are running, so we can try to reproduce it. Thank you for reporting it.!

Thanks, it’s actually a broken SD card.

Cheers

Trying to flash latest Knoppix iso to a usb drive using balenaEtcher 1.5.120.

I get a successful flash (flashing = success and validation = success) from the BalenaEtcher gui, but macOS (Big Sur 11.3.1) complains with the following:
"The disk you attached was not readable by this computer. I have the following three choices: Eject, Ignore, Initialize.
I select ignore, but the result is that the usb stick is not formatted.

Here is the log from sudo:

Any idea why macOS is complaining when balenaEtcher is telling me “Flash Complete! 1 Successful target” ??

Hi, this is because the knoppix ISO image uses a filesystem that could not be read by MacOS. Your USB should work when you try to boot from it. Here are the partitions created in the USB drive when you flash Knoppix:

sdb iso9660
├─sdb1 iso9660
├─sdb2 vfat
└─sdb3 reiserfs
