I’m in windows 10. When I select the USB drive in Etcher I get a “controlled folder blocked” message. When I continue to Flash I get a “antivirus prevents etcher.exe from making changes to memory” or something like that in a box at the bottom of my desktop. Appreciate any help.

You need to grant the permission to the app etcher-util.exe to access protected memory.
(I hope this app is well safe otherwise it can crap all your computer..!)
In Windows setting, look for: Ransomware protection/Allow an app through Controlled folder access. Then select the “etcher-util.exe” and grant access.
