BalenaEtcher just... stops working after I pick a file with "Flash from file"

I open the program, I pick “Flash from file” I select the os file I want, Pop_OS, the program just stays stuck in a way I don’t know how to describe.

I’ve reinstalled BelanaEtcher and still have the same issue even after redownloading the Pop_OS file.

Which Pop!_OS ISO Image are you trying to flash? (Standard, NVIDIA, or RAS PI 4)

Not OP, but I have the same issue. Using Linux Mint Cinnamon Linux Mint 22 “Wilma” - Linux Mint.

Few things i’ve tried:

  • Changing file name to remove special characters
  • Launch Etcher with “Run as Administrator”

Steps:

  1. Select “Flash from file”
  2. Pick ISO from Download folder.
  3. When moving to “Select target” there is a small circle with “/” inside of it.

3.1 Sometimes an error window pops up.

im having the same issue and im using NVIDIA. trued everything i can think of getting it to work

Hi,

What version of balenaEtcher are you using? Also, have you tried more than one USB drive to make sure it’s not a hardware issue?

I’ve successfully flashed both linuxmint-22-cinnamon-64bit.iso and pop-os_22.04_amd64_nvidia_43.iso images using balenaEtcher 1.19.25 (latest as of right now) on Windows 11.

Another thing would be to check that the images you’ve downloaded are valid using the SHA256 sums provided by both Pop!_OS and Linux Mint.

Hey, I’m having the same problem, i’m using the 1.19.25 version and the image is to install ubuntu on another pc and its from the main website, any help?

Hey there all. I just wanted to post and state that I am having the same issue with this version of Etcher. I have a previous version installed on a separate computer and just flashed successfully a drive with the image. The OS that I have installed is Windows 10 (where it’s failing). I have Windows 11 and the previous version of Etcher where it’s successful.

For anyone in 2025 still having this issue:
I uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version
When you click “Flash from file,” try selecting the file from a local folder and clicking “Open” on the Explorer rather than double clicking the file.
Hope that solves it for you like it did me. Good Luck

Had this issue this morning trying to create a Linux Mint USB. Came across a similar forum that suggested downloading an older version of Etcher (specifically the August 2023 version) and it worked for me.https://forums.balena.io/t/file-not-loading-in-balenaetcher-version-1-19-19/370611/4

Thank you @JLWagner. This worked for me. I’ve been wrestling with this for two days. Rolling back to v1.18.11 (Aug 2023) is the only solution that worked.

I’m on a fresh install of Win 10 Pro for Workstations v2009. The only software I’ve added is 7-zip, Firefox, Crystal Disk Info/Mark, HWiNFO64, and some Lenovo-specific things for this PC.

The iso I’m trying to make bootable is https://downloads.hexos.com/TrueNAS-SCALE-24.10.0-HexOS.iso and my downloaded file is a hash match.

BalenaEtcher v2.1.2 (May 2025) would not proceed after choosing the iso file. It would still respond to inputs, like entering the settings page, but wouldn’t display any usb drives. I tried re-installing, run as admin, installing with admin, Flash from URL, changing USB, and a few other solutions. None worked.

After creating the boot drive with v1.18.11 (Aug 2023) I re-installed v2.1.2 (May 2025) hoping that it might work but it still fails in the same way.

The only odd things about my system is that it’s a Lenovo Thinkstation, it has 1 x boot hdd, 1 x ntfs sata ssd, and 4 x uninitiated hdd sata drives. I changed the 4 x uninitiated HDD to NTFS volumes in case they were preventing the USB-drive search from finishing. No change. It still failed at same point as everyone else who has this problem.

I did get an error message a handful of times after selecting the ISO, but most of the time it just failed silently. I ran BE v2.1.2 as Admin. Tried “Flash from File”. Got this error message rarely:

[Window Title]
Error

[Main Instruction]
Error opening source

[Content]
Something went wrong while opening C:\temp\TrueNAS-SCALE-24.10.0-HexOS.iso.

Error: (0 , h.requestMetadata) is not a function

[OK]

I’m done with trying to figure this out. I’m glad that rolling back 2 years worked, although I’m still puzzled why it’s necessary.

i also had a problem it says its corrupted olarila maojave
