Thank you @JLWagner. This worked for me. I’ve been wrestling with this for two days. Rolling back to v1.18.11 (Aug 2023) is the only solution that worked.
I’m on a fresh install of Win 10 Pro for Workstations v2009. The only software I’ve added is 7-zip, Firefox, Crystal Disk Info/Mark, HWiNFO64, and some Lenovo-specific things for this PC.
The iso I’m trying to make bootable is https://downloads.hexos.com/TrueNAS-SCALE-24.10.0-HexOS.iso and my downloaded file is a hash match.
BalenaEtcher v2.1.2 (May 2025) would not proceed after choosing the iso file. It would still respond to inputs, like entering the settings page, but wouldn’t display any usb drives. I tried re-installing, run as admin, installing with admin, Flash from URL, changing USB, and a few other solutions. None worked.
After creating the boot drive with v1.18.11 (Aug 2023) I re-installed v2.1.2 (May 2025) hoping that it might work but it still fails in the same way.
The only odd things about my system is that it’s a Lenovo Thinkstation, it has 1 x boot hdd, 1 x ntfs sata ssd, and 4 x uninitiated hdd sata drives. I changed the 4 x uninitiated HDD to NTFS volumes in case they were preventing the USB-drive search from finishing. No change. It still failed at same point as everyone else who has this problem.
I did get an error message a handful of times after selecting the ISO, but most of the time it just failed silently. I ran BE v2.1.2 as Admin. Tried “Flash from File”. Got this error message rarely:
[Window Title]
Error
[Main Instruction]
Error opening source
[Content]
Something went wrong while opening C:\temp\TrueNAS-SCALE-24.10.0-HexOS.iso.
Error: (0 , h.requestMetadata) is not a function
[OK]
I’m done with trying to figure this out. I’m glad that rolling back 2 years worked, although I’m still puzzled why it’s necessary.
