balenaEtcher indicates success but Mac OS X says The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.

Hello,

balenaEtcher says that the microSD card was programmed correctly, but Mac OS X says that The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.. The error message seems to occur when balenaEtcher unmounts the verified microSD card. The image being copied to the card is a console version of Debian for the BeagleBone Black, specifically bone-debian-9.12-console-armhf-2020-04-01-1gb.img. I am using balenaEtcher 1.5.80 and I am running it on a 2018 Mac Air running Mac OS Mojave 10.14.5.

When I try to boot the BeagleBone Black from the resulting image, it doesn’t behave according to the material on the various BeagleBone websites.

What am I doing wrong?

Regards,
Peter

Hi @Gregson welcome to the forums. , from an Etcher perspective, it actually sounds like everything is working properly and normally. The Error “The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer” is quite common when flashing Linux operating systems to an SD Card, what you Mac is telling you is that whatever you just flashed to that disk, is some format that Mac does not understand. Which, is not surprising, as it is a Linux filesystem.

Did you have the verification step on etcher enabled? Which image did you select from this page: https://beagleboard.org/latest-images ? There are two variant of the SD card, one that flashes to internal eMMC and one that boots from SD card and they require different treatment to make them boot correctly. I believe for the flasher type you have to hold down S1 button while powering up the device, so if you have that version, it could be that you need to hold the button.
