AC8265, 802.11ac support

Hi,

I am trying to get running my Jetson Nano with AC8265. AC8265 is visible in “main” container, where I installed network-manager. Using nmcli it is possible to connect to 802.11n networks, but if I do a scan, then it is not possible to see any 5GHz networks. Does it mean that driver installed in BalenaOS for AC8265 doesn’t support 5GHz networks? I am also not able to create a hotspot on 5GHz. If it is a problem in a driver, is there any way how to add it?

Hello, I have a couple of questions to confirm before diving into the firmware realm:

  • are you using external antennas?
  • how far away are you from the wifi router? Are there multiple walls in between?

Also, if possible can you provide relevant output of dmesg?
You will need to:

  • ssh into the host
  • Run dmesg | grep iwl

Yes I use external antennas, that were included in package with AC8265. Jetson is about 4 meters away from router.

Looks like there is newer version of iwlwifi-8265. It tries to load iwlwifi-8265-26, but its not there. Could it be because of using iwlwifi-8265-22?

Hi, could you try to setup the correct regulatory domain for your country that allows 5G channels? See instructions at https://www.balena.io/docs/reference/OS/network/2.x/#regulatory-domain. What can happen is that the default world wide regulatory domain does not allow to irradiate on the 5G band unless it knows it is allowed in your country.

After I add currect regulatory domain of country it is possible to see and to connect to 5GHz networks. Also AC is supported because rate of 5GHz network is about 400Mbit/s. Next question is why I am not able to create 5GHz AC hotspot during runtime.

Nothing sticks out as a problem from the iw phy command.

iwlist uses the older wireless extensions for Linux. Can you check with iw dev wlan0 scan, which uses the newer subsystem? Also can you please paste the output of iw dev as well.

To create hotspot I used these commands:

But still, I search better solution to create hotspot or connect to another network during runtime.

There are a couple of 5GHz networks returned by the iw scan. Can you please share the output of nmcli d wifi so that we see whether they reach NetworkManager as well?

Main problem is that I need to create high speed hotspot. Connection to other network could be slower. I was trying to search why I am not able to create 5GHz AC hotspot through diagnosis of connection to other network. First I was not able to connect to other 5GHz network, but still there is problem with creating 5GHz AC hotspot
