MacMini Hub Issue

I found a little snag today. I have an M4 MacMini - fully updated. I have a usbc hub with nvme drive. I hold most of my file on the nvme (2TB) instead of the internal 256GB for obvious reasons. Anyway, my Ubuntu .iso is on the nvme in the dock and I tried (with no success) to write the iso to a usb stick in a port on the hub. It gave me a “source disk” notification beside the usb and the box was greyed out. I used a cheap usbc-usba adapter and put the usb stick in that and it worked fine. Is this a MacOS quirk that reads both drives as the same because of the adapter or is it balena, maybe even the way the dock identifies itself? Any, not a huge deal for me but as these docks are very common, it might be worth looking into if you know how. The dock I have is the UGREEN (UGREEN Mac mini M4 Dock & Stand with NVMe SSD Enclosure, Docking Station with 3*USB A 3.2, 2*USB A 3.0, 2*USB C 3.2 10Gbps, SD/TF 170MB/s, USB C Hub Compatible with Mac mini M4 Pro : Amazon.ca: Electronics).
