Intel NUC built in bluetooth controller not recognized

I set up an Intel NUC because bluetooth is not working on the nVidia Jetson (see post from yesterday).

I have a different problem on the NUC.

On the NUC "bluetoothctl scan on"reports “no controller available”. It is not seeing the built in bluetooth adapter. “hciconfig -a” lists hci0: with both address and features set to all zeroes

After attaching a USB bluetooth adapter and rebooting the NUC, “hciconfig -a” lists both hci0: and hci1: , but hc1: still lists all zeroes for address and features.

I really need to use the built in bluetooth adapter on the NUC because my RF tight enclosure has an external antenna for it. Has anyone else successfully used the NUC’s internal bluetooth?

Here’s the output with an external USB bluetooth dongle attached:

Hi there @equack,

Is the adapter blocked via rfkill? Can you paste the result of rfkill list please?

@equack, I would also suggest having a look at the output of the dmesg command on the host OS for any error messages. In the recent past I remember an issue where newer NUC models (6th gen?) had new built-in Bluetooth / WiFi chipsets for which older versions of balenaOS did not ship with the required firmware files. The output of dmesg would show something like:

[ 4.113668] bluetooth hci0: Direct firmware load for intel/ibt-17-2.sfi failed with error -2
[ 4.113669] Bluetooth: hci0: Failed to load Intel firmware file (-2)
...
[ 4.398886] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-9000-pu-b0-jf-b0-30.ucode failed with error -2
[ 4.398888] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: no suitable firmware found!

That particular issue was fixed in balenaOS v2.29.2+rev2 (or later) as shown in the balena-intel changelog:

v2.29.2+rev2 (2019-02-01)

  • Remove older AC 8260 WiFi firmware [Florin Sarbu]
  • Add firmware for AC 9560 wifi chipset [Florin Sarbu]

What balenaOS version are you running?

Also be sure to check the rfkill output as suggested in the other post.

Here’s rfkill list. Nothing is blocked,

root@5107308:~# rfkill list
0: hci0: bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
1: hci1: bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

I’m running Balena OS 2.32.0+rev2 development.

I see the following from dmesg:

[ 3.603081] bluetooth hci0: Direct firmware load for intel/ibt-18-16-1.sfi failed with error -2
[ 3.603086] Bluetooth: hci0: Failed to load Intel firmware file (-2)

@equack, thanks for the dmesg lines. May I ask you to attach a file with the full dmesg output to the following GitHub issue I’ve just created? -

And if you know, please also add a comment with the full model number for the NUC, something like “NUC7i7BNH”. I will ask the balena OS team to investigate further. Hopefully it will be a simple matter of releasing an OS revision with the firmware file. We will let you know here or through the GitHub issue.

Thank you for reporting this issue and helping us get it sorted!

The NUC model number is BLKNUC7i7DNH1E.

Here’s the dmesg output, part 1 of 2:

@equack, thank you for sharing the dmesg output – I think it shows that the built-in WiFi is also missing a firmware file (“Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-9260-th-b0-jf-b0-38.ucode failed with error -2”). I’ve also attached it to the GitHub issue I mentioned. The required work was ack’ed by our devices team. At the moment I don’t have an estimate of how long it will take (they have some tasks ahead of this one in the queue), but watch the GitHub issue for updates and feel free to get back to us with any questions. Thanks again for reporting this issue.

Hi. This is now released to production
