Gray box and nothing else

I’m running Ubuntu 16.04. I downloaded and chmodded the appimage, now only a gray box displays, as if it’s half-loaded. There are icons at the top-right which do nothing, and the ‘open source’ message at the bottom. I’ve tried running from the command line as well as the gui with the same result.

The same problem on Linux mint 19.1.
An empty gray window in which nothing works.

Please provide more details:

  • OS used;
  • etcher version;
  • console output if any (press ctrl + shift + i) in etcher and go to the console tab;
