Flash Failed, Win10 64bit Pfsense USB flash

This is the error code I get; I am able to flash the usb drive on my laptop, but my main PC will not allow me to use the program without error. This is the error I receive. I have tried many troubleshooting attempts without success. I used 7-zip successfully on my laptop and I used the same version on the PC to decompress the .gz Pfsense file.

Hi Devin, thanks for reaching out. It sounds like Etcher works fine on your laptop, but not on your PC, even though you’re flashing the same image to the same USB drive? Did I get that right?

One thing to note is that Etcher can handle .gz files just fine without 7-zip. However, if it’s actually a .tar.gz file then you probably do need something like 7-zip to extract it first.

I haven’t been able to find anything related to that specific issue. I’m going to reach out to the Etcher team for you and see if we can get to the bottom of it.

In the meantime, can you:

  1. Try uninstalling Etcher and re-installing.
  2. Try the Portable option when you download Etcher. It sounds like there’s some install issue and maybe this will help provide the necessary files.
  3. Try running Etcher as administrator (right-click the application and select “Run as administrator”) and see if that changes anything.

Hi, have you been able to try Heath’s suggestions? In particular, I’m curious to know if the “Run as administrator” option works? If not, can you try disabling Windows Defender and running the program to see if it’s a permissions problem?
