I’ve tried other drives. The most recent one I tried was a SanDisk SDHC card. Still no luck.
Can you try with the most recent 1.5.73 version? There was a revamp in the UI which has now been simplified. This might be unrelated, but worth a try as for now I have no idea about the issue.
Just to recap/confirm: after you select the image, you can indeed select the drive which is appearing in Etcher’s target selection (a.k.a. the button in the middle), correct?
So that you have both image and target buttons that show “Change” instead
Yes, I can select the drive. Both buttons show “Change.”
I tried 1.5.73. Still no luck. The flash button would not light up even with Unsafe Mode turned on.
As you mentioned that this is Windows 10 Enterprise, I have to wonder if your ability to write images to flash drives is being administered by your central IT organization via Group Policies or other user account controls. If there are underlying security controls in place, Etcher may be realizing that it cannot write to the drive, thus the button does not “Light Up”. Our of curiosity (and knowing this is a bit of a hassle), can you try to use a different machine?
Yeah, I can try a different machine.
Having the same issue. Can use it with Administrator rights but our users don’t get that?
Hi @Stacia.thompson - welcome to the Balena Forums.
Looking at the open issues on Etcher, I see a lot of possible reasons for this. One common solution is to temporary disable “controlled folder access” in Windows 10 defender ransomware protection. Please let us know if that solves your problem, otherwise we’ll investigate further.
Thanks,
James.
James,
Thank you but this computer is used by multiple people. Our security will not allow us to removed Controlled Folder Access. Do you know exactly what folders and what files inside those folder that a user would need to modify (reading and executing isn’t usually the problem)?
Thank you,
Stacia
Hi, I asked our Etcher engineers for more insights on this. My guess is that this should be the SD card reader drive itself and not folders that are part of the application, but let’s see.
Thanks,
Zahari
Hi there,
our Etcher engineers suggest that you will still need admin privileges for etcher to work properly. perhaps you can try to investigate the effect of the Controlled Folder Access by using the audit mode mentioned here on a device where you have admin rights and see what effect the restrictions have.
thanks!
I had the same but last night it burst into life. I came across a post on here about folder permissions in virus and protections in windows 10.
Hello,
I got a chance to use Etcher on a different computer and it worked just fine.
@rahul-thakoor @majorz et alia:
Hi, I installed balenaEtcher and am running as Admin trying to flash using a freshly formatted fat32 drive on Windows 10. After the “flash from file” loads, in the “select target” section, the box next to “Name” auto-outlines when the cursor hovers over it, and when clicked in that area, "selects and outlines in a blue shadow. Obviously, nothing is selected, since this is just the field title. The checkbox next to “Generic Storage blah blah”, however, remains blank when the cursor hovers over it or the mouse clicks it. The background of the entire strip the box is in does turn a light blue color, however. This is “Etcher-Portable” v 1.5.103 . It looks to me like there is a UI problem such that these features checkbox fields might need to be merged together or somthing like that. In case it wasn’t obvious, this all means that I can’t select any drive to flash to, and that the software is not able to work. Please advise!!!
i have tried 3 diff types of USB stick and it just erases them all. makes them unusable. tried both portable and installed versions.
here are the results EVERY TIME i try and use it.
Hi @0xdao, this seems to be a corruption problem I’ve experienced recently on one of my USB as well. I resolved the problem following the step named “Clean and format flash drive using command-line” from this guide How to format a USB flash drive on Windows 10 | Windows Central to format properly the USB first and then reused etcher to flash the image again. Would it be possible for you t try this procedure and tell us if this was the problem ?
Hi, @aelu I’m right now dealing with the same problem as you described it before, have you found an solution for that?
I’m on the 1.7.8 version and trying to connect with an generic flash drive with 16 gb, just bought it today so it was completely empty
this is the output, I’m not very keen with that maybe someone can help me further?
