Looking ahead to the Windows 10 end of life date I was looking to test Linux Mint on my 2016 Asus laptop. I downloaded the appropriate ISO and then used BalentaEtcher on Windows 10 to create a live USB using the guide on the Linux Mint website
( Create the bootable media — Linux Mint Installation Guide documentation
I didn’t format the USB stick or clear any existing files off as I didn’t see any instruction to do this.
I plugged in the USB stick and then either restarted or shutdown and switched my laptop back on. I wasn’t sure what my key was for getting to the boot menu (Was it F8, enter, esc etc). After a number of attempts I managed to bring up the boot menu where unfortunately the ‘Live USB’ wasn’t an option.
So I went to go back into Windows. So I unplugged the USB stick and restarted my laptop and it went straight to the BIOS… Strange I thought. Tried it a few more times only to realise the boot option for Windows 10 on the C drive SSD had gone!
I tried adding a boot option manually I think by pointing the boot option at the bootmgfw.efi file. But once you hit save and exit on the BIOS it would just loop back to the BIOS again and the boot option I’d just added had disappeared!
So basically I’m stuck with a laptop that can only access the BIOS with no boot options. So maybe a MBR issue? Or maybe an issue with the BIOS itself if it’s not retaining the boot option additions?
Does anyone have any suggestions what might have caused this? And the best way of fixing it ideally. I.e restore access back to the Windows 10 boot option on the C drive.
I had a quick flick through the forums here and didn’t see anyone else recently have this issue so I’m thinking it might be user error on my part..
Thanks.
