Anyone know what’s wrong? I’m trying to download tails on to my surfacebook 2 using a 16gb usb drive.
This is why many people won’t try this and stick to their cozy little Windows comfort zones. Guess I’ll go some more research. Is this even any better than Windows?
Hi
What vesion of balenaEtcher are you using? There was a known issue on one of the older releases and updating etcher would fix it.
Same issue for me.
MacOS Catalina 10.15.4
balenaEtcher 1.5.89
Trying to write an iso image file, generated with MacOS Disk utility, as described here: https://medium.com/@ccarnino/backup-raspberry-pi-sd-card-on-macos-the-2019-simple-way-to-clone-1517af972ca5
I gave full disk access in the security a privacy settings to balenaEtcher.
I have tried to run it with admin rights as well (from a terminal, sudo /Applications/balenaEtcher.app/Contents/MacOS/balenaEtcher), but it does not work either.
Anything I can do to give more information?
Thanks!
Hi @Fra, do you see any meaningful error information in the DevTools?
You could open DevTools by pressing Cmd+Opt+I
. It’d be useful to see the console logs.
Next, do you have any file-protection and/or anti-virus program that might be blocking Etcher from accessing the SD cards?
Finally, how big is the image file and how much storage does SD card have?
Hi @gelbal,
The .iso file has been generated as an image from the same smart cart (32 GB, Sandisk), so the size should match exactly.
An interesting thing could come from the behaviour of command line dd:
iMac-di-Francesco:Backup francesco$ sudo dd bs=1m if=/Users/francesco/Desktop/RaspberryPi/Backup/rpi4_d ietpi_backup_2020_05_13.iso of=/dev/rdisk5
dd: /dev/rdisk5: Input/output error
362+0 records in
361+0 records out
378535936 bytes transferred in 23.290976 secs (16252472 bytes/sec)
iMac-di-Francesco:Backup francesco$ sudo dd bs=1m if=/Users/francesco/Desktop/RaspberryPi/Backup/rpi4_dietpi_backup_2020_05_13.iso of=/dev/disk5
1070+0 records in
1069+0 records out
1120927744 bytes transferred in 9780.261186 secs (114611 bytes/sec)
Using dd referring to /dev/disk5 instead of /dev/rdisk5 seems to work (the output is obtained sending a SIGINFO message from another terminal, using kill -s SIGINFO pid), but it is EXTREMELY SLOW. It would take about 90 hours to flash the 32 GB SSD card.
I have Avast anti virus running, I will try to disable it.
The console log is a bit long, trying to past it here:

I’ll try to disable Avast…
Hi again,
Just another info.
Disabling Avast did not help.
I’ve tried to flash the DietPi image (a .img file, 1,07 GB) that I flashed about a month ago, and it failed again, but at that time I was still on Mojave, not on Catalina.
Funny (let’s say like this) enough, from a Dell laptop running windows, flashing my iso file fails as well. I might need a new SD card…
Thanks,
Francesco
Thanks for the detailed report Francesco.
I will forward this to the Etcher team and get back to you as soon as I hear from them, in the meantime let us know if you get the chance to test with a different SD card, just to rule out any possible issues with that.
Hi again,
I have not tried with another SD card, but I found something that might be useful. I tried to reduce the block size when using the “raw device” /dev/rdisk5, from 1 MB to 100k, but it failed. Then again to 10k, and it worked!
Command was:
iMac-di-Francesco:Backup francesco$ sudo dd bs=10k if=/Users/francesco/Desktop/RaspberryPi/Backup/rpi4_dietpi_backup_2020_05_13.iso of=/dev/rdisk5
3056025+1 records in
3056025+1 records out
31293702144 bytes transferred in 11821.435517 secs (2647200 bytes/sec)
I don’t know, it might be related…
Not really the fastest data transfer on the planet, but at least I have my Raspberry Pi back online!
Cheers,
Francesco
