Installing Linux on Macbook runing High Sierra 10.13.6

This seems to be an old problem but i cannot find an answer. My Mac won’t run the bootable drive i create. Not sure how to get around that. Help.

Macbook Air, 4 GB, 1.7 gHz Intel i5 chip.

Just to clarify - are you trying to use your Mac to provision another device with balenaOS, or are you attempting to run balenaOS directly on your MacBook?
Could you share a bit more detail about the device type, the provisioning process you followed, and any logs or errors you’re seeing?

That will help us understand the issue better and guide you toward the solution.

I have both a MacBook Air and a Windows PC. I can use either one to get the balenaOS, with the goal of installing Linux on the MacBook. I have High Sierra 10.13.6 and an Intel processor on the MacBook. Hope that gives you what you need to know.

Still looking for a solution. Hope you can help.

Hi @ericmagnuson ,

Are you looking to install balenaOS on the MacBook or a different Linux distribution? I’m wondering if this is about getting our OS up and running or just using Etcher to install an unrelated Linux distribution on your MacBook hardware.

I want to use balena to install Linux on the MacBook. Access to a PC and can make a bootable flash drive there and use that to install Linux on the MacBook. I just can’t run balena on the MacBook. It says I need a newer operating system.

Which Linux distro/version did you create a bootable flash drive for using the PC? What happens when you boot the MacBook with that flash drive?

I don’t recall which version I tried. The message is that I have to update my OS before I can run the bootable flash drive. . I have High Sierra 10.13.6 and an Intel processor on the MacBook. Does that help?
