balena os on beagle bone does not work

hello everybody,

this is my first post here… I want to evaluate balena os on a beaglebone black but failed to get it up and running wirh the tutorial on https://www.balena.io/os/docs/beaglebone-black/getting-started/

  • with production image the device isn’t starting at all
  • with development image the device starts, but it’s not possible to connect by ssh and after a 2-3 minutes the device shuts down by itself - section of serial log below

can anypody help here?

thanks
michael

Hi there, welcome to the forums.

Looking at the getting started instructions you linked, it seems to disagree with this other getting started page - https://www.balena.io/docs/learn/getting-started/beaglebone-black/nodejs/ in that it doesn’t have as detailed flashing instructions.

Could you try to follow the getting started guide here instead: https://www.balena.io/docs/learn/getting-started/beaglebone-black/nodejs/ and let us know how it goes? Thanks

@eberli did you ever manage to make any progress here? If the installation process for the Beaglebone Black is still causing trouble for you we’d like to know!

Just to confirm that I had the same issue with the docs for BeagleBone. It s not clear that the image will flash the internal eMMC and power off. If the sd-card is not removed, it will keep re-flashing on subsequent boots.

I have not tried the production image yet, I’ll do that in the next few days. Another peculiarity was that my device was in inactive state on the web interface until I logged in via the balena-cli.

Hello @marikgoran did you solve your issue? I would like to learn more about the issues that you get now following these steps Get started with BeagleBone Black and Node.js - Balena Documentation ?

The instructions in the nodejs documentation are correct, as they clearly indicate that the sd card needs to be removed after the device completed the flashing and shut down.

A small suggestion would be to use the parlance of Beagleboard.org that refers to these type of images as “flasher images”, somewhere near the top of your document. For those of us who work with beaglebones a lot, that clearly indicates the type of the image and what to expect from it during the flashing.

Thank you for the follow up.

Hi @marikgoran

That’s a useful suggestion, thanks! I’ll create an issue internally to track this
