I have created a new version of the balena-kodi docker container: see https://github.com/janvda/balena-kodi
(This is an updated fork of https://github.com/balena-io-playground/balena-kodi).
So it runs version 17.4 of the Kodi media player in a container. I can tell you that it works on a raspberry pi connected to a TV or monitor via HDMI.
It also introduces an additional environment variable ENABLE_REMOTE_CONTROL_VIA_ADVANCEDSETTINGS which enables kodi remote control via http or kodi remote app. (for more information see Readme)
