I noticed that BalenaOS supports Surface Pro tablets (Balena supported tablets).
However, are there low cost tablets that are already supported? We are planning on using Balena for managing a point of sale system installed in 100+ locations. Each would be composed of 2 low cost tablets (<$200).
Can BalenaOS be flashed onto a Fire tablet? Or Samsung tablets?
Hi there Paulo, you are correct, balenaOS can be installed on the Surface devices. The reason for that is that they are x86-based devices, running Intel processors. The Fire or Galaxy tablets contain Arm processors, and boot differently. In those situations, specific builds of the OS need to be created including all drivers for the SoC, display, touch interface, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc. As it stands, this is not a trivial process. Over on the x86 side, devices can just boot a “generic-x86_64” version of the OS, so if you can perhaps find some cheap Intel or AMD-based tablets, that might be enough to get you going. Hope that helps!
