Does the dashboard need to be running for the quote to change?

No. The device only tries to load a quote from the API once and if that fails you get the ‘sorry folks’ message until the following day when it will try again.

instead of an inkyphat display I’m using one from Waveshare - would that make a difference in my ability to display?

Getting the error:
