It seems not possible to make it print pretty, because on boot it gets all content deleted (file becomes 0kb)
The original config.json (download from the install page) is just one flat line
I cannot find any useful example. All I need is to add sshKeys, so can login locally to the machine (without the silly cloud connectivity)

Thanks for reaching out. You don’t need to add the indented text as it is. It’s a JSON file, so you can add the SSH key by creating a new key value pair in that flat line that you. This can be done after you flash by mounting the boot partition. Let us know if it doesn’t work.
There never was a question about “need”, but rather WHY the correctly indended text gets ignored & deleted. I do not work with single long line (was more difficult to make sure it is correct)
Anyway, gave up on this project, too fiddly to make it usable
