openBalena at scale: How many devices are you managing?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently running a self-hosted openBalena server and expect to have around 1,000 active devices connected in the near future.

Since there isn’t much visibility into how openBalena is being used in production, I’m curious to hear from others in the community:

  • How many active devices do you currently have connected?

  • If you’re managing more than 1,000 devices, have you encountered any scalability or performance issues?

  • Is there a device count at which you started noticing problems or needed to scale your infrastructure?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences, lessons learned, and any best practices for running larger openBalena deployments.

Also, please vote in the poll below so we can get a better picture of the community’s deployment sizes:

  • <10 devices :+1:
  • < 100 devices :ok_hand:
  • <1.000 devices :raising_hands:
  • < 10.000 devices :scream:
  • >10.000 devices

Thanks!

@giuseppe Cool, you also have a really big fleet with your own openBalena instance.

Did you have some challenges already with the standard installation? Or have you already modified something yourself regarding scalability and stability?

Not as of yet, but i do have the caveat that i dont got all the devices in 1 fleet or all connected at once. So i dont have all the devices attempting to pull updates at the same time or so.

But no, i followed standard installation and have not needed to modify anything to accommodate it
