Hi,

I an trying to use Etcher version 1.5.63 under Windows 8.1 (64-bit) to write the image D:\XPS\_8700 Extended Files\Users\RowanB\Downloads\2019-09-26-raspbian-buster.img to an unbranded 64GB Micro SD card in drive G: (a card reader slot in my desktop PC). When I do so I get [this](http://sylvesterbradley.org/images/etcherproblem191124.png).

What am I doing wrong? How do I get this image written to the card?

Is there a log somewhere that tells me what is going wrong? If so, where?

Thanks - Rowan

Hi,
It seems like you hit this issue ([https://github.com/balena-io/etcher/issues/2950](https://github.com/balena-io/etcher/issues/2950)). Could you open the DevTools Console (ctrl + shift + i) and provide us with the logs so that we can investigate this in more detail?
Thank you.

Hi, thank you for the logs.
Could you check that you haven’t got the `Controlled folder access` Windows setting enabled?
You can do so by pressing the Win key, searching for `Controlled folder access` then either allow Etcher in it or disable the setting completely.
If that still doesn’t work/the setting is already disabled (or Etcher already has an exception in it), you can also try running as administrator, but I’d advise to do so only afterwards.

Thanks for your reply.

I’m sorry, I don’t know how to do this.

```
  If I press the Win key, I see the Start menu. If I enter
```

“Controlled folder access” in the Search box, and press Return, it
eventually finds lots of things, but none of them look relevant.

```
  If I search the internet for Controlled Folder Access, I find the
```

following instructions:

> ## Use controlled folder access

  If I select the Start menu, there is no item Settings. There is

```
PC Settings, but this does not contain any item Update and
Security.
How do I get to Controlled Folder Access?
Thanks - Rowan
Hello,
There’s an alternative explanation of how to do this here: [https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4046851/windows-10-allow-blocked-app-windows-security](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4046851/windows-10-allow-blocked-app-windows-security)
Please let us know if that works for you!
</div>
Sorry, no, it doesn’t. The problem is that in the Start menu,
there is no item Settings. I am using Windows 8.1. Maybe the
problem is that I’m using the Traditional Start Menu add-in. I’m
not sure how to disable this.
Any other suggestions?
Thank you - Rowan
Ah, I believe that `Controlled Folder Access` feature is not present in Windows 8.1, so we can ignore that. Could you try logging in / running etcher as administrator, if you have not already?
</div>
Sorry, I don’t know how to do that either. Currently there is only one user registered on my PC, RowanB, who is a “local systems administrator”. Do I just need to run the Etcher as this user? If so, then that is what I have already done (which causes the error). Or do I have to be a higher level administrator than “local systems administrator”? If so, how do I create such an account? Or do I have to run it as the username “administrator”? If so, how do I create this account?
Sorry to be so dumb…
Thank you - Rowan
Chris,
```
  Thanks for your further help. If I run Etcher using the method

```
described in this link, then it seems to run better. But at the
end of the process, it says that there is a checksum error:
 ![bkinlblhmogcofmd.png](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/balena/original/2X/3/35af100bb1eb833ab223d4c44c83cd9cc184aa56.png)
```
  If I try to open the memory card slot containing the supposedly

```
flashed card, it says “Please insert a disk into the Removable
Disk (G:)”, just like it does for an empty slot. I don’t know
whereto Windows should be able to read the flashed card,
or not.
```
  I have attached the log (zipped, since your email system rejected

```
it as too big without zipping).
```
  Please can you suggest what may be wrong, or how I can

```
investigate this further?
Thank you - Rowan
Hey Rowan,
We’re glad the method described above made thing better.
What you see is a legit warning, and its Etcher telling you that what was written to the drive doesn’t exactly match the image you were flashing, as a protection mechanism. This is usually the case with faulty SD Cards, SD Card readers, electromagnetism, etc. Can you try again, and potentially with a different i.e. adapter and see if that makes a difference?
Thanks for your reply.
I have tried using a different adapter. It gave the same error:
 ![mniogmnjihhmldgf.png](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/balena/original/2X/c/c1fdae8ace6969bb580735d310c239a41365e0ba.png)
```
  I have ordered some more micro SD cards and will try with one of

```
those when they arrive.
```
  Should I be able to read the files written to the card with my

```
Windows PC? I can’t. Does this suggest something more dramatic is
wrong with the process, e.g. the card is formatted in the wrong
way? Does the card need to be formatted before being flashed, or
does the flashing process effectively format it? The first time I
tried flashing it, I formatted it first, and disabled the “fast
format” feature, which meant that it took nearly 24 hours to
format the card.
Thanks for your help - Rowan
Hi there,
If you have a spare SD card available, I would recommend testing that as well since we often see corruption of the physical media.
Please let us know how that test goes for you when you are able to complete it!
