I've tried flashing TAILS onto 4 USBs and I am getting Flash failed

Thanks for reaching out. I’ve noticed another user who seems to be experiencing the “flash failed” error you see, though I’m not able to replicate it myself when flashing the Tails image.

I’m reaching out to our Etcher team to find out if there’s more we can ask that will help us troubleshoot and get to root cause, so stay tuned and we’ll be back with next steps soon.

I just did a quick upgrade to my Etcher version and was still able to flash the image successfully. To rule out a few things, can you share the following with me?

  • What OS are you flashing the image from?
  • Have you tried flashing anything other than TAILS / does it flash okay, or is everything failing to flash?

Im flashing from Windows 10
Everything is failing to flash, after flashing the Usb disappears, I can’t find it on windows explorer, I have to use diskpart to recover it. Even in the BIOS I can’t find the USB, I have a dell g3 3590

What do you mean by “everything is failing to flash” @Thanish24? Are you referring to other images beyond Tails, such as Ubuntu or Raspbian? If you are indeed flashing other images, and those are failing as well, then perhaps Windows Defender or some other security setting is interfering. As mentioned, we were able to flash Tails (and other linux distros) fine, so something on your machine is interfering with the process.

Hi, I am having the same issue attempting to flash Tails. I am getting the warning box: Attention Something went wrong. If it is a compressed image, please check that the archive is not corrupted. User did not grant permission.
I have downloaded and verified from the tails site numerous times and tried storing both on a usb and desktop but cant get past this point.
please help.

I have turned off windows defender and attempted to flash only to receive the same issue

Created an account just to say I finally got it to work. I had to disable Ransomware protection and Core isolation, both from the Windows Security panel. Then I ran balenaEtcher as Admin and it worked to write Pop_OS.

Hi, can you please let us know where you downloaded that version of etcher from? It should be downloaded from balenaEtcher - Flash OS images to SD cards & USB drives
