# Beginner's trouble

I just downloaded and installed Etcher v 1 5.63 for Windows X64. I am trying to use it to burn OpenHabian to a 32GB micro SD card. I have set things up like this:

When I click Flash, it brings up this box:

I clcik Yes, then it says it’s started. After a little while it produces this error message:

What am I doing wrong? How do I get Etcher to work to write this image to this memory card?

Hi Rowan,

Sorry to hear you are having issues! Can you press Ctrl+Alt+I, navigate to the “Console” pane on that new window and copy paste all the information you see in there?

Such application logs might help us figure out what the root issue is!

Is that a capital I, or a lower case L?

At what stage do I have to press that key combination? When the error message is still on the screen, or after I’ve clicked Retry?

In neither case does it seem to do anything…

Hi Rowan,

Is it an “I” as in Indiana. Pressing it at any point should open the debugging tools. Can you try running them just after starting Etcher, to check if that makes a difference?

No, it doesn’t seem to do anything if I press it just after Etcher has started.

Oh, I’m sorry, I think you said that before. My mistake.

Unfortunately I can’t do what you have asked, because it gives me the error: “Sorry, new users can only put 5 links in a post.”.

I have tried editing the links to make them not look like links (I changed each occurrence of :// to 😕 /), but I still get the error message. If you can tell me what edit to do to the log to get around this rule, I will try again.

That was very helpful. Can you try these things, and see if they make a difference:

- Can you try another SD Card, or another SD Card adapter?
- Can you decompress the `.xz` image and flash it directly?
- Can you try formatting the SD Card, and trying to flash it from a clean state?

?

It looks like Windows is preventing Etcher from writing data to the SD Card, but its not yet clear why.

OK. I am using a different card (64GB this time), in a different adapter, and I am formatting it (not Quick Format) first. The formatting is still going on (or it may have hung - Windows doesn’t give me any kind of progress indication ☹ ). Once the formatting is finished I will try writing the decompressed image file. I have to go out in a moment, so I may not get back to you until tomorrow.

It took nearly 24 hours to format the memory card without using Fast Format. I won’t try that again! Using the IMG file, and writing to the newly formatted memory card, it seems to have worked this time.
