If you have access to a Linux system, the [drive recovery command advised in the Etcher documentation](https://github.com/balena-io/etcher/blob/master/docs/USER-DOCUMENTATION.md#gnulinux) is:

> Make sure the drive is unmounted ( `umount /dev/xxx` ), and run the following command as `root` , replacing `xxx` by your actual device path:
>
> `dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/xxx bs=512 count=1 conv=notrunc `

If that command gives you “permission denied”, it may be because it is not being run as the root user. You can also try prefixing the command with “sudo”:

> `sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/xxx bs=512 count=1 conv=notrunc `

Turns out the flash drive i bought has a known error that puts it into read only with no way of recovering so thats a bummer
